SETTING BACKGROUND
Vampires (who might be descended from a curse on the biblical Caine) have always been hiding in cities, using blood-granted abilities to seize positions of power and security just beneath the surface of mortal society, upholding the "Masquerade" that keeps them hidden. There are a variety of vampire clans with different abilities and beliefs they pass down. In modern nights, most vampire clans belong to either the Camarilla (who believe in vampire law and reject the idea that the world is ending) or the Sabbat (who reject vampire law and are preparing for the final battle against the ancient vampire apocalypse.) There are also other supernaturals around.

The end is here, by the way. The vampires that believe in it call it Gehenna, and they were kind of right. It's happening, it's bad, and nobody fully understands why. It has something to do with primordial forces that make up the world being completely out of whack, and it does involve very ancient vampires (Antedeluvians) rising to ruin everything.

Our game is nominally set in 2009/2010, but technology and references have gotten somewhat anachronistic and years don't always line up.

OC/AU/CRAU REQUIREMENTS

OC HISTORY
  • Kevin grew up in Massachusetts in the 80s and 90s. He was a laid-back kid who loved to skateboard and was bad at school.

  • When he was 17, he had a girlfriend (Sharon) who turned out to be a vampire. She turned him without permission. This was traumatic, and his refusal to love this situation (and her) meant Sharon locked him up for six months of trying to change that before giving up on him. It was a horrible time, and a poor vampire education.

  • Cut loose, Kevin drifted to NYC. Along the way, he picked up a stray dog (Scooby). Kevin saved Scooby's life from a car strike by feeding him blood, and now Scooby's dependent on it.

  • The NYC Camarilla let him stay because he's from a clan (Brujah) traditionally used for dumb muscle, and he wasn't deemed threatening.

  • Kevin spent a decade keeping his head down, throwing himself into skating and other timewastes to keep the bad vibes at bay.

  • One night, he got attacked by a slime monster that came up out of the sewers. Kevin reported this, and got thrown in with some other low-status vampires (Tommy, Leanne, and Beatrice) that were expected to solve this problem.

  • It was much worse than they thought: the gang (and a vampire scholar friend, Beckett) discovered there was a huge vampiric monster percolating in the sewers. This was the Antedeluvian ancestor of Clan Tzimisce (known for body horror), but nobody wanted to believe them.

  • The group ended up in a fight with part of the monster above ground, and was caught on camera. This broke the Masquerade, and the Camarilla tried to handle the PR disaster.

  • Kevin reconnected with his parents because of this. His sire also resurfaced, and Clan Brujah punished her for creating him. Having to face her was traumatic, but Kevin let her live.

  • At an unnoticed point, Kevin started to enter golconda. It's a near-mythological state where a vampire's blood metabolism drastically slows (among other benefits he hasn't yet reached). The group was/is confused.

  • The group's handler had actually been planning the fall of the Masquerade. He and his coconspirators set up a huge event in NYC where powerful vampires gathered to publicly set new policy with humanity. Then the monster (which they believed was just a forgotten Tzimisce weapon) would kill the leadership so they could take over.

  • The party picked up a troubled mage (Melissa) and more vampires: a newly dead Twitter friend of Kevin's (Grace), the disgraced Prince of NYC (Qadir), one of Beckett's old allies (Lucita), and one of Beckett's old enemies (Vykos). They escaped the city in Beckett's RV when the flesh creature rose up and began to expand. They also rescued Kevin's parents.

  • The group got deus ex machina'd out of a situation that should have killed them, and were met by an emissary of the divine that they don't really understand. It gave them the option to remain safely in death, or to return to the world in a place they "were needed." After some deeply personal reflection, they all agreed to return. Kevin's folks stayed behind in peaceful death. Kevin had lots of emotions.

  • The group got spat back out somewhere in Kentucky. They met some human survivors on the road, and killed several Sabbat vampires that had been preying on them. The survivors were headed toward a place near Cumberland Falls they had been told was safe, and the vampire group decided to follow.

  • The trip got derailed when Beatrice astral projected and couldn't find her way back. They managed to recover her spirit from a very cursed swamp, but in order to do so they had to fight off a powerful (and very bad) spirit. This "cleansed" the area.

  • Cumberland Falls belonged to the last sept of werewolves, or at least nonewerewolf families and one traumatized one. The rest had gone into the spirit world to fight, and died. Because the local spirits liked the vampires, the sept cautiously welcomed them.

  • During this, Kevin was contacted by a werewolf totem spirit because of his connection to a long-lost xbox friend: a young werewolf. (Neither had known what the other was.) He was trapped in the spirit world and said he'd scout out the problem from that end, but hasn't reported back yet.

  • After getting attacked by a guy from a group of Christian survivors (long story), Kevin had a spirit-given vision that was encouraging him to be less passive and to act with intent. (He's okay now.)

  • The vampires and the last sept worked out a plan to destroy the Tzimisce antedeluvian by attacking it in the spirit world and reality at the same time, and it worked. Unfortunately this all isn't over yet, but it was a huge win.

  • PERSONALITY
Kevin has a unique set of problems specific to being a teenaged vampire. He has weaker planning skills than he should, and poorer impulse control. It's not for lack of trying. Parts of Kevin's brain that never got to mature never will. He is, in his own words, "kinda like fucked up Peter Pan."

That being said, being undead has changed him. A lot of this has been in negative ways: Kevin's self-worth has been hugely damaged by not just the shame of being a parasite, but a parasite other parasites call stupid, uncouth, and close to useless. He's developed learned helplessness about having control over his existence, too. Kevin internalized that he wasn't "smart" when he was still in school, and being called an idiot by other vampires for so long has calcified that into a certainty that he's obviously not smart enough to make good decisions about how to make his unlife any better. He feels unprepared to solve problems, and that his only option is usually to wait for them to blow over. Patience is a virtue, but Kevin's passivity is just as damaging as being too rash. He has improved since gaining actually supportive friends and having no choice but to act in the face of the apocalypse, but it's still terrifying for Kevin to look down the barrel of all these problems he feels like he can't actually help with.

There is a lot of general angst to both feeling dumb and the vampiric condition, but Kevin manages to get by most of the time. His primary hobby (skating) is almost a meditative practice for him, he's easily distracted, and he's gotten very good at keeping himself that way. Kevin prefers to enjoy what he can and make the most of time he has with others rather than dwelling on the things that make him stressed and sad. He still does from time to time, though.

Kevin's conviction that he isn't "smart" means he's blind to other, less academic or tactical kinds of intelligence he does have. His greatest contributions to the group lie in being a patient, gentle, and deeply thoughtful pillar of support. Kevin likes people, is deeply earnest, doesn't judge, and pours effort into understanding. He's a messed up vampire kid who's just really alert to pain due to his own trauma, not a therapist, but Kevin's been able to provide a kind of support to a group of people whose unlives have been largely devoid of it. Though he's nonconfrontational and lacks confidence, Kevin has an iron will and steel spine that show when he finally does put a foot down. His friends haven't yet managed to get him to fully understand how much these things matter.

Despite not totally believing their kind words (though it sure is nice of them to say), Kevin really loves his friends. So much. It's easy to befriend him, he doesn't take it personally when people tell him to fuck off, and he can find things to sincerely admire in just about anyone. While he gets frustrated sometimes, he has a powerful grip on his anger and usually directs it away from people.

Kevin's not an angry person by nature, but Clan Brujah have supernaturally touchy tempers and if he does lose his temper, he loses it hard. It helps that honestly, Kevin tends to turn anger inward instead of lashing out. He's often introspective, typically sad first and angry second, and more upset with himself than anybody else. He also has a good handle on the vampiric Beast within him because he has few extreme reactions, and can balance listening to it with holding it back when necessary. Unlike eating his own anger, this is one of only a handful of Kevin's mechanisms that can be considered healthy.

Vampires aren't a very emotionally healthy lot, as it happens. Kevin's internalizing anger and struggle to stop thinking of himself as "stupid" are ways he repeats the pattern of the abuse he suffered. Used to being the bottom dog in a society of territorial predators, Kevin doesn't like drawing too much attention from anyone he sees as powerful. People who take an interest in him or want close to him quickly make him anxious. He offers others trust, but a lot of that choice is rooted in feeling like he is helpless to stop them from hurting him if they really want to. Kevin died young, and until very recently he had to manage for a long time without any kind of guidance, mentorship, or care from anybody that could meaningfully help him. Having real friends recently has had a major positive impact on him, but he's also been under a lot of stress and doing a lot of emotional labor that has been sometimes taxing. Kevin's exhausted, but he doesn't know how to ask for support or what it would look like to have it.

For now, he's happiest just getting to be everyone's goofy, knuckleheaded skateboard vampire bro. Don't ask more than that from him, he's not sure he can give it.

    CANON POWERS
If they have superpowers in canon please list a full list of them here just so we have them somewhere, even if you're not using them in game.

    POWER SELECTION

    POWER TYPE
    Canon Superpowers

    FREEBIE POWERS
Kevin is nocturnal, sees well in darkness, and does things like cry blood because he's a vampire. He's also very good at sneaking because... vampire.

    GAME POWERS
This will be different depending on what power selection you're choosing.

    Canon superpowers:
Kevin is a 13th generation vampire, the last generation before the blood starts getting too thin to work properly. He's very low-power by vampire standards. There are also all the disadvantages that come with the curse. There is a lot of stuff to unpack here and I'm so sorry.
    • Being Dead: Kevin's body is dead. He can pass for alive, but his main tell is that he's not as warm as he should be/lacks a pulse unless he spends blood to fake those. He only pretends to breathe to be polite, and while he can take in food/drink his dead body can't process them and will have to cough up ashes later.

    • The Beast: Less a superpower and more just an unlife fact. Kevin has a lot of self control, but in sufficiently upsetting situations, vampires can lose themselves to part of their nature they call the "Beast" in a frenzy. A sufficiently enraged vampire just attacks, and a sufficiently terrified one flees. Kevin will generally try to swallow a frenzy, but it will be obvious to anyone watching that something is very wrong. The Beast is also more active when he's low on blood, causing him to notice prey and have intrusive thoughts. Kevin's relationship with his inner Beast is better than most, but he remains fallible.

    • Vulnerabilities: Vampires are hardy, but can be destroyed through decapitation, sunlight, or fire. The Beast has a powerful lizardbrain fear of the latter two. He can deal with fire if it's under control, but if it startles him? Zoom, higher thought processes are out the window and probably so is Kevin.

A stake (or other wooden object) through the heart will force Kevin into torpor until it is removed. It's pretty much a vampire coma.

Vampires also must sleep during the day unless they really struggle.

    • Blood Drinking: Kevin is in an unusual vampiric metabolic state where he doesn't slowly burn through his blood supply just by existing, but if he's hurt or uses up blood on vampire powers he will need to replace it. If he runs too low on blood, he can lose control of himself due to hunger.

Kevin can feed on animals if he has to, though they taste bad and are less efficient. He can also take blood that has been properly stored.

Vampiric feeding is a pleasant and potentially addictive sensation for mortals, which Kevin has never, ever been comfortable with so he has always tried to spread his feeding enough to keep that from becoming a Thing with anybody. (Also I as a player don't super want to get into it. Possible workarounds have been discussed, and Kevin himself is very on board with finding ways to survive without directly biting people.)

Kevin's fangs are usually hidden. They're supernaturally strong/sharp when out. Vampires can close their own bites.

    • Healing: Kevin has to spend blood to make his body heal. As long as it's not burns or unique supernatural damage, though, blood healing is very fast.

This is a conscious process if he's awake, but his body will do it automatically while he's asleep. Worse injuries require more blood and time. If Kevin is hurt badly enough, he'll be immediately knocked into torpor for a week while his body self-repairs. It will be impossible to wake him until he's finished and when he does, he'll be out of his mind with hunger.

    • Spooky Blood Magic: Vampire blood has special properties. I don't particularly want to get into this unless it becomes plot relevant because it's some edgelordy 90s grimdarkness, but: If fed to a mortal, it grants them temporary low level vampiric abilities and stops their aging while it's in their system. The price: it's extremely addictive and forces the person who drinks it to imprint on the vampire more and more. A mortal person or animal enhanced/bound this way is called a ghoul, Kevin's dog is an example. Vampires can also do this to control other vampires. A blood bond can only be lessened by going through withdrawal.

Kevin has negative infinity desire to create any more ghouls (he already feels bad about Scooby), blood bond anyone, or drag anyone else into vampirism hell.

In addition to the default vampirism things that all Kindred have, Kevin has several Disciplines, which are schools of vampire powers different clans cultivate.
    • Celerity- Speed. Kevin's movement speed and reaction time are ridiculously quick. At a dead run, he can crack 34mph. If he expends blood, he can multiply that. ("Canonically" he can max his top speed at around 115, but the blood cost is prohibitively extreme.) His extra speed and dexterity let him pull off feats of inhuman balance, agility, finesse, and sometimes nonsense like a 12 foot vertical leap.

    • Potence- Strength. Kevin is much stronger than he looks. He'd be able to dead lift 800 lbs, and the "canonical" example for someone at his strength level is throwing a motorcycle (~400lbs). Burning blood can give him bursts of temporary strength beyond this (which is something any vampire can do) but I wouldn't say he can get any further than half a ton.

    • Presence - A form of emotional manipulation. A low level of Presence lets a vampire seem magnetic/interesting to others, and Kevin's slightly less low level of Presence lets him (theoretically) ping an enemy's (even another vampire's) primal fear by dropping the human facade a little. It's a staple discipline of his clan, but Kevin isn't actually good at this.

    • Animalism - Kevin's minimal grip on Animalism means he can communicate empathically with animals via sustained eye contact. He can ask them to do things, but it's not mind control.

    • Fortitude - Invulnerability. Kevin has a very low level of Fortitude, which lets him shrug off a little more damage than a normal person, makes him slightly more resilient to fire than other vampires, and helps him ignore pain. (He's very new to doing this and not great at it yet, so it's noticeable but not extreme.)

    Power Selection: Canon Powers

I'd kinda like to keep Kevin mostly intact in his general vampiric nature, good and bad, though last time we ran WL we had the Green give him a magic ring that lets him operate in sunlight/be awake during the day at all and it was a good solution.

I'd like to let Kevin remain unusually strong and fast within reasonable limits, especially given that he has major vampirism downsides. For speed he tops out at 30 mph and for strength 250 lbs, though if he burns blood he can surpass these limits temporarily (but never the game max, and it would be extremely blood-expensive for him to reach the game caps.) This is a serious resource consideration on Kevin's part. If he burns through his blood, his self control suffers. If he gets hurt, he can't choose to stop his body from expending blood to repair itself when he sleeps. He also needs to have a reserve to take care of his dog.

Fortitude can go by the wayside, Kevin's reasonably tough and doesn't need invulnerability levels to do interesting things.

I'm not interested in using the edgy blood-related mind control/addiction stuff in-game. Even if it works, Kevin's never going to be in a position (or put anyone else in a position) where he'd find out because 1) Kevin wouldn't and 2) I don't want to.

He's going to continue to maintain vampire blood in Scooby's system because at this point it's the only responsible thing to do as a ghoul dog owner. Scooby is not actually mind-controlled by it. (There was some plot stuff that happened to prove this.)

    ABILITIES
Kevin's mundane skills include extremely strong will, great general athletic ability, skateboarding, freerunning, figuring out what's bothering people, listening, getting by in a big city, driving, sneaking, handling dogs and befriending animals, forgetting vocabulary words, and hitting stuff real, real hard

    SETTING/SUITABILITY
    Rest assured, he'll be fine

    ADDITIONAL INFO
DOG: This time, I'm letting Kevin bring his dog. His name is Scooby, he's a smallish pitbull mix with a sweet personality, and he's a ghoul. He's supernaturally intelligent and a little stronger/faster than normal for a dog his size. It's common for vampires to ghoul dogs to use as weapons, but Scooby is first and foremost a friend. He can retrieve items if you're specific and patient about it and if he bites it hurts, but Kevin has mostly taught him to run rather than fight.

Kevin takes his responsibility toward Scooby very seriously and regularly feeds him small amounts of blood to keep him healthy. (Scooby is old enough now that he would rapidly age and die if Kevin didn't.) He isn't actually subject to mind control due to vampire blood because some plot shit broke everyone's blood bonds, he has just been cheerfully using all his free will to follow Kevin anyway.

SWORD: Can Kevin keep his cool sword the werewolf sept gave him? It's a silver blade that can light on fire because it was forged to fight the undead super fungus. He isn't a crazy good swordsman (he could use more actual training) and I'm fine being strict that it's magic fire for burning foes, not something you can use for fire-based shenanigans. It's just cool, and its name is Foehammer because Kevin is a fucking dork who figured out he can love Lord of the Rings and Halo at the same time.
